Communing Rits to Enter Meta?
With the new update it seems like rits can replace protection monks and possibly even imbagons.
Heres a build I can See becoming popular to give your party constant 75% block, protective spirit effect, 15 damage reduction. As long a minion master isnt present and the party utilizes effect mob control.
Communing 12+1+3
Spawning Power 12+3
Soul Twisting [Elite]
Boon of Creation
Shelter
Displacement
Union
Armor of Unfeeling
Signet Of Creation [to fuel summon spirit spam]
Summon Spirits
EQUIP: A communing staff or a +20E staff with 20% enchantment.
Radiant and Attunements on armor.
USAGE:
Cast Boon of creation and then soul twisting before shelter, displacement, and union. put up armor of unfeeling to halve spirit health loss and use summon spirits to maneuver spirits out of harm way as well as to heal. Since Soul Twisting is a 15 second recharge (8 second if staff halves recharge time) you can effectively recast spirits every 8 or 15 seconds (or sooner if under lots of pressure but you should always recast spirits after soul twisting to benefit from instant recharge) and all you have to do is to keep spirits alive with summon spirits long enough so that shelter, displacement and union is nearly maintained. Use Signet of Creation of a free +13e to fuel more summon spirit spam. Be sure to stay in spirit range of party and away from the combat.
Counters:
Minions
Party Overaggro
Getting aggro'd yourself -> Spirit Death

I'd go 14 communing, 12 SP and 6 channeling. Instead of Signet of creation you can use siphon.

rit lord is definitely another viable option. I just like Soul Twisting for the energy management allowing for more summon spirit spam and effectively making spirits have the same recharge as soul twisting, 15 seconds so you can get another set of spirits up pretty fast. ritual lord only cuts shelter from 45 sec to about 22 sec with 25e cost, its still hefty.

Oh god I accidentally posted a build nearly identical to this on another thread. I disagree with both BoC and SoC. You'd be better off with GDW. Every rit should be carrying this weapon spell.
I'd also rather go with +1 communing 20% rather than longer 20% enchant. Better as a switch seeing how marginal the benefits are.
I used a build with a similar concept using Comm prot spirits with AP. The spirit lasts long enough for a very noticeable effect. It is true that DN won't be as powerful, but this build is insane enough as it is. Maybe a OoU ranged attacker minion would be a better choice. It's incredibly powerful as it is. So many new builds and ideas....

I had almost the identical thought after seeing the new Soul Twisting. Be aware, though, that there currently appears to be a bug with the skill. I have already submitted a bug report but I encourage others to do so as well. This is the bug, feel free to test and reproduce:
If you refresh Soul Twisting before using all 3 charges (assuming high Spawning) it will reset the timer on the skill, but won't reset the counter to 3. This is how I did it:
1. Cast Soul Twisting
2. Cast Shelter
3. Cast Displacement
4. Wait for Soul Twisting to recharge
5. Cast Soul Twisting (timer is reset)
6. Cast Union (Soul Twisting is consumed after a single binding ritual! <-BUG)
In any case, I'm very excited about the new skill, and would love to see this fixed. The more bug reports the sooner this will happen, hopefully. Go to guildwars.com -> support -> knowledge base -> ask a question to submit.

Yea, I can definitely see these rits challenging prot monks in the meta. Constant Party wide Prot spirit, Aegis, and Shielding hands is very good, and these spirits are very maintainable now with either rit lord or soul twisting. Of course they were already maintainable for the most part with the old rit lord... but its even easier now.

Anet REALLY seems to have an issue when programming that sort of stuff lol. Can't manage to get it to stick
At any rate, I think they should have kept Rit Lord's Recharge scaling. with about a 75% recharge time, it'd be more in line with Soul Twisting as far as defensive spirits go. As far as offensive spirits go, people are going to still either take SoS or Ghostly Might. So, Rit Lord, although a very good elite, Seems to lack a bit in many scenarios.
